Chautauqua 2006 at a Glance
The Eighth Annual Chautauqua Tent show was a huge success! The Delaware Humanities Forum would like to thank the volunteers and Council Members for all of their hard work and dedication in making Chautauqua a first class event! This year was a special year as we celebrated the 375th anniversary of the town of Lewes; the first town in the first state. To commemorate this occasion, Chautauqua featured special guests like William Penn, Henry Hudson, Anne Bonny, and Blackbeard! Each guest had an amazing tale and audience members discovered new and interesting things with each presentation. Some audience members were even recruited to be crew-mates on Anne Bonny's next ship! During the day, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation gave demonstrations on navigational aides used by sailors of the time. Far removed from the electronic systems used today, these maritime tools utilized natural elements such as the sun and gravity! Let's not forget the interesting sight of seeing Blackbeard the Pirate roaming the streets of Lewes! Perhaps he was sneaking off to retrieve his lost buried treasure! Henry Hudson certainly had a fascinating story and off in the distance one could catch a glimpse at his voyage ship, The Half Moon. It was a great Chautauqua and it couldn't have been made possible without the support of our vendors, contributors, volunteers, council members, and of course visitors! Thank you to all and we hope to see you next year at the Ninth Annual Chautauqua Tent Show!
