Planning a Visiting Scholars Presentation
Step 1:
Preview the index of available presentations (Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-12) to find a subject of interest. To learn more about a listed topic, simply click on the presenting scholars' name to access his/her contact information. Phone the scholar with your questions. If, after reviewing the index of presentations, you can't find a presentation on your subject, call the Delaware Humanities Forum for assistance at (302) 657-0650.
Step 2:
Contact the scholar of your choice at least three weeks before the hoped-for visit date. Confirm time and date with the scholar and begin working as a team to plan the visit. Together, you can shape a program just for your class. Plan to discuss:
- your objectives for the visit
- the size, level, and degree of preparation of the class
- the content and methods of the visiting scholar's presentation
- the nature of follow-up classroom activities
- inform the scholar if you are considering including more than one class in the event (some scholars prefer working with small groups of students)
Step 3:
At least one week prior to the event, once teacher and visiting scholar have agreed upon the content of the program, print and complete the VSP Request Form, and mail or fax it to the DHF:
Delaware Humanities Forum
100 West 10th Street
Wilmington, DE 19801
FAX: 302-657-0655
Step 4:
The DHF will send confirmation of the event to both teacher and scholar. Following the presentation, scheduling teachers may be asked to fill out evaluation materials.
Step 5:
Teachers are expected to be part of the classroom event. Teachers must contact a scheduled scholar immediately if an emergency arises in which the teacher would be absent during the event. New arrangements must be made, and the DHF must be informed of any changes.
Step 6:
Do not hesitate to contact the DHF at any time during the planning process with questions or for assistance. (302) 657-0650 or (800) 752-2060.
